Redundancy

Redundancy appears wasteful when viewed through an efficiency lens, but it is the primary mechanism by which complex systems survive in uncertain environments. The deep insight is that reliability cannot be achieved by making individual components perfect — it can only be achieved by assuming they will fail and providing alternatives. Every robust system you've ever relied on is 'wasting' resources on components that exist solely to never be used.
