Power Laws

Most of our statistical intuitions are built for bell curves, where the average is meaningful and extremes are rare. Power laws shatter this — they describe worlds where the average is meaningless, extremes dominate, and a single observation can be larger than all previous observations combined. Recognizing a power law distribution is recognizing that you're in a fundamentally different statistical universe where planning for the median is planning to be wrong.
