Dual Coding

The brain doesn't have one memory system — it has at least two semi-independent channels (verbal and imaginal) that can reinforce each other. When you encode information through both channels simultaneously, you create two retrieval paths instead of one, making recall dramatically more robust. This is why a diagram with labels beats either a diagram or text alone — you're literally doubling the neural pathways to the same concept.
