Signaling

Signaling reveals that much of human behavior is not about the ostensible purpose but about credibly communicating qualities that are otherwise invisible. The critical mechanism is cost: a signal only works if it would be prohibitively expensive for someone without the underlying quality to fake it. This means society is filled with elaborate, wasteful rituals whose hidden function is information transfer under conditions of asymmetry.
